Annie sat on the back porch with her grandma
Said I really could use your advice
I don't know where I'm going or what I'm doing
I'm just hoping that it ends up alright
Grandma pointed out to the yard where the dog was chasing squirrels
She said, "Girl, you listen here"

You could spend all your time chasing squirrels that you'll never catch
While your life gets away
Why not see what's right in front of you
Listen and be heard
Instead of chasing squirrels

Annie sat in the old car with Jonny
Her best friend since the age of 3
He said, "Annie, I think you know I love you
I'm just hoping that you'll say you love me"
She saw Grandma's finger point to that dog out in the yard
She said, "Girl, you listen here"

You could spend all your time chasing squirrels that you'll never catch
While your life gets away
Think about the ones who are close to you
Spend your time with them
Instead of chasing squirrels

It's been five years since Annie married Jonny
Said I really could use your advice
I love to sing and I love to play guitar
Want to make it but I'm scared to try
Jonny pointed out to the yard and said, "I'll tell you what Grandma said,
I love you, so listen here"

You could spend all your time chasing squirrels that you'll never catch
While your life gets away
Understand that your dreams have meaning too
Live the life that you want
Instead of chasing squirrels
